Fixture Installation in Northwest Arkansas — Mr. Fixit of NWA

The fixture in the box, finally on the ceiling

That new ceiling fan has been sitting in its box for a month. The dated dining room light needs to go. The bathroom fan rattles more than it vents.

These are the jobs homeowners hand us every week, because fixture work means ladders, overhead lifting, and mounting hardware that has to match the fixture.

Our fixture work covers replacement and installation at spots where a fixture already exists, which keeps it squarely within handyman scope. Owner Matt Houle brings 15+ years of hands-on experience across construction, property management, and home repairs to the work, and fixture swaps often share a visit with other small items from our full home repair services list.

Timing is flexible too. A single fan swap is a quick visit, while a whole-house round of new fixtures, detectors, and exhaust fans fills a morning. Either way, the work gets the same careful mounting and the space is cleaned up before we leave.

What we install

Every item above happens at a location where a fixture, fan, or detector already exists. That distinction matters, and the scope note further down this page explains exactly where our work stops and a licensed electrician takes over.

  • Light fixtures at existing locations
  • Chandeliers and pendants at existing boxes
  • Ceiling fans, including fan-rated box checks
  • Bathroom exhaust fans
  • Outdoor and porch lighting
  • Smoke detectors

Why homeowners hand this work off

Swapping a fixture sounds simple until you are on the ladder. Stairwell and vaulted ceilings put fixtures well beyond a household stepladder. Holding a chandelier overhead with one hand while connecting the mount with the other is a two-person job pretending to be a one-person job.

And a ceiling fan hung from a box that was never rated for one will wobble, hum, and eventually work itself loose.

We show up with the ladders, the mounting hardware, and the experience to know what belongs behind each fixture. Fans get checked for a fan-rated box and balanced so they run smooth. Heavy fixtures get support that matches their weight. Exhaust fans get seated so they vent instead of rattle.

Bathroom exhaust fans deserve a special mention. A fan that has quit moving air leaves moisture sitting on walls and ceilings after every shower, which invites problems no homeowner wants. Replacing a tired unit at the existing location is a small job that protects paint, drywall, and caulk lines throughout the room.

How fixture installation works

Where our fixture work stops. We replace and install fixtures at existing locations only. Panel work, rewiring, new circuits, and any electrical work that requires a permit stays with licensed electricians. If your project crosses that line, we will say so up front rather than work outside our scope.

  • Tell us what is changing — Share the fixture type, the room, and the ceiling height when you call or send a request.
  • Out with the old — We remove the existing fixture and inspect the box and mounting hardware behind it.
  • In with the new — The new fixture goes up on hardware suited to its weight, with ceiling fans checked against a fan-rated box.
  • Test and tidy — We test operation, balance fan blades where needed, and leave the space clean.

Often booked in the same visit

  • Bathroom and Plumbing Fixtures — Faucets, shower doors, and caulking

Questions

Can you replace a light fixture with a ceiling fan?

Usually, yes. Fans are heavier than lights and they move, so the ceiling box has to be fan rated. We check the existing box during the visit and let you know what we find before the fan goes up.

Do you install fixtures on tall or vaulted ceilings?

We handle most residential ceiling heights, including stairwells and vaulted rooms, depending on access. Mention the height when you reach out so we arrive with the ladders the job needs.

Do you do electrical wiring?

No. Our work is fixture replacement and installation at spots where a fixture already exists. Panel upgrades, rewiring, new circuits, and permit-required electrical work belong to licensed electricians, and we will tell you when a project calls for one.

Can you install outdoor lighting?

Yes. Porch lights, entry fixtures, and other outdoor lighting at existing fixture locations are part of our regular work, and outdoor swaps add easily to any other visit.

Should I buy the fixture before you come?

Having the fixture on hand keeps the visit efficient, so yes when possible. If you are still deciding, tell us the room and what you have in mind and we can flag anything about weight or mounting worth knowing before you buy.
